DIY: Baby Rag Quilts in Strips and Stripes

2:55 PM

Remember this tutorial...

Well, one night I was lying in bed and the thought came to me... why not make the strips into stripes.  And that is exactly what I did.

This Easter I decided that I would make my little ones, and my sister's little ones a quilt each.  I thought the stripes resembled an Easter egg.  Kind of perfect don't you think?

The only difference between my original tutorial is that each strip is 2 layers rather than 3 layers like my original quilt.  Here are the following fabric measurements you will need.

2 yards of a solid flannel fabric of your choice cut into 12, six inch strips.

1.5 yards of white fabric cut into 14, three inch strips

1/2 yard of fabric cut into 2 inch strips for your binding. DIY Binding Video Here

I omitted the fabric in between each strip...

Now simply follow the instructions found HERE to create your quilt or watch the video below.

They end up being about 48in x 42in.

Here's our DIY Binding Video:

Well there you have it.  I can hardly wait to give these to the kiddos.  They will be perfect for picnics, the beach or whatever spring and summer activities come our way!

P.S.  I think the kids kinda love their new blankets!  YAY!!

  3. They have only one layer to them right.

  4. Each quilt has two layers rather than three from my previous tutorial. They are still thick just not as thick, perfect for the warmer months to come.

  8. Where did you find such lovely colors in flannel? I especially love that pinky coral and the gray. Also, are the bindings flannel as well?

    1. Earlier I mentioned that I bought my flannel at Joanne's. After all is said a done, I would actually try and find a better and higher quality flannel than what I found there! Good luck.

  9. are you using the width of the fabric for the strips or the length or what is the finished length of the strips you said cut 12 ^" strips for the color but I don't know the length

  10. wondering what the length of the strips are did you use the width of the fabric or the length

  11. @LeAnn I used the width of the fabric. In fact when I cut the strips the fabric was folded just like it comes off the bolt. The I unfolded to get the strip. The total width of the quilt when finished is about 42 in. Hope this makes sense and helps! Happy sewing!

  12. @jenny I got all the flannel at Joanne's. They have every color imaginable! And yes, the binding is flannel as well! Happy sewing!

  13. Did you preshrink the flannel? If not did you have any trouble with even shrinkage? Very cute blanket! Thanks for the instructions.

  14. I love how bright and beautiful these are, plus they seem really quick to make! I want to make two-- one for my toddler and another for our baby on the way! :) I looked up the flannel at the Joann's website and it has terrible reviews...have you washed it and if so how did it hold up? Thanks!

  15. @unknown - I would actually recommend spending a little extra on the flannel. Although Joanne's has a tone of colors it may not be the best quality. I recommend going to a quilting shop.

  16. @Marilyn McCormick - don't worry about washing in your fabric first. In fact, when making rag quilts you shouldn't prewash your fabric. Good luck! Happy sewing and take care!

  17. Love your idea. I made a hot pink and white one today but I was wondering if you could rag the outside edges as well instead of binding them?

    1. you can totally rag the outside edges of the quilt rather than binding. Just sew a seam around the quilt and snip away. good luck!

  19. So very cute!!
Can you explain how you do your binding? I don't see stitching marks in your photos. I only know how to do binding that you sew on top of the blanket or on a blanket that isn't sew through - where I can reverse the blanket to do. I'm missing something..
    Thanks!

  20. So.. I'm a total beginner, but I ordered my fabric to do this and the colored came in normal cotton while the white came in flannel. Will it still work and be cute or should I go through the hassle of returning it lol.

  21. In would recommend returning it. It will just turn out better. What a pain! Sorry about the hassle! Good luck!

  23. Can you make without using a sewing machineC

  24. Since there are two solid colored layers, could you sew right sides together down the middle, then iron it so right sides are facing out, and sew everything together?

  25. I'm totally planning on making a few of these for some of the little ones I know! Planning on doing the rag side with flannel and the other side with fleece. Also, planning to stitch in their names with basic, blocky uppercase letters on one of the dark stripes. Thanks for the idea and here's to hoping the version in my head will work!

  26. How big did you make your seams when you sewed the strips together?

  27. I loooove your striped blankets - thank you for the tutorial!! Here is a chronicle of my attempt: http://lyndiprojects.blogspot.com/2014/03/springy-striped-rag-quilt.html

  28. Do you think minky would work?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Minky will not shrink but the flannel will probably shrink a lot (at least, in my experience with Joann flannel, it shrinks a ton) so that would make the minky look baggy and loose.
Also, the minky will not fray so the seams wouldn't get that neat, chenille blanket type effect that flannel will give.

  29. Are you still selling these blankets on etsy? I tried clicking the link you listed above but it doesn't work. I love the blanket but I don't sew ;) thanks!
